SAE J726
Air Cleaner Test Code
Historical laboratory test code for determining and reporting dry-type and oil-bath internal-combustion-engine air-cleaner performance.
⚠ WITHDRAWN
SAE J726 has been withdrawn and is no longer in active use. Refer to current applicable standards for new designs.
KEY PARAMETERS

Current Status
SAE J726 was canceled in 2002. Earlier revisions addressed laboratory determination and reporting of air-cleaner performance characteristics such as airflow restriction or pressure drop, dust collection efficiency, dust capacity and structural integrity. It remains useful only when a legacy specification or historical test report explicitly cites J726.
02 /
Use with Current Engineering Work
Do not infer current compliance, service intervals, terminal restriction values or product qualification from a historical J726 reference alone. Current product evaluation should follow the active standard or OEM requirement applicable to the specific air-cleaner system and market.
03 /
Relationship to ISO 5011
ISO 5011 is a separate international standard for inlet air-cleaning equipment performance testing. Historical SAE J726 data and ISO 5011 data should not be treated as automatically interchangeable; compare only results generated under explicitly compatible test conditions and reporting requirements.
COMMON ENGINEERING MISTAKES
Presenting SAE J726 as an active standard or current North American equivalent of ISO 5011.
Using historical J726 test results as proof of current ISO 5011 compliance without compatible test evidence.
Turning dust-capacity data into a universal field service interval without measured loading and OEM restriction limits.
Publishing generic efficiency improvements, restriction thresholds or service-life multipliers as though SAE J726 mandates them.
