MEMBRAVEX Membrane Separation

Engineering Reference · Industrial & Process

Platform: AQUVEXIS™

Technology: MEMBRAVEX™

Engineering Relationships

  • MEMBRAVEX™ covers reverse-osmosis, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration treatment paths.
  • Membrane selection follows feed-water analysis, target permeate condition, pressure, recovery, fouling and scaling potential.
  • Pretreatment is part of membrane protection and cannot be separated from membrane performance assessment.
  • RO/NF element test methods must not be represented as universal ultrafiltration standards.

Components

  • Membrane element
  • Pressure-vessel or module interface
  • Pretreatment filtration
  • Feed, permeate and concentrate sampling points
  • Pressure and flow monitoring

Problems

  • Permeate-quality deterioration
  • Membrane fouling
  • Scaling
  • Loss of normalized flow or rejection

Failure Modes

  • Pretreatment inadequate
  • Membrane chemistry incompatible
  • Scaling potential uncontrolled
  • Element integrity or sealing defect

Symptoms

  • Permeate conductivity rises
  • Pressure demand rises
  • Recovery declines
  • Cleaning frequency increases

Root Causes

  • Feed-water condition changed
  • Fouling load increased
  • Scaling control insufficient
  • Oxidant or chemical exposure exceeded compatibility

Diagnostic Methods

  • Characterize feed, permeate and concentrate.
  • Normalize flow and quality against operating conditions where applicable.
  • Review pressure, recovery and fouling trends.
  • Inspect sealing and element integrity.

Corrective Actions

  • Correct pretreatment or scaling control.
  • Requalify membrane chemistry and operating envelope.
  • Correct sealing or integrity defects.
  • Verify post-service permeate performance.

Maintenance Procedures

  • Trend normalized membrane performance.
  • Maintain pretreatment.
  • Monitor pressure, recovery and permeate quality.
  • Apply validated cleaning and replacement criteria.

Operating Conditions

  • Feed-water chemistry
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Recovery
  • Fouling potential
  • Scaling potential
  • Required permeate quality
  • Membrane material compatibility

Standards

  • ISO 20468-5:2021 — membrane-filtration performance evaluation for water-reuse systems.
  • ISO 25175:2026 — air-tightness, permeation and salt-rejection test methods for RO and NF membrane elements within its marine-technology scope; it does not cover UF.
  • ISO 23044:2020 — industrial-wastewater softening/desalination guidance including NF and RO where reuse is the project context.
  • ASTM D6908-25 — integrity testing of water-filtration membrane systems where that system test applies.
