AQUVEXIS Electrodeionization

Engineering Reference · Industrial & Process

Platform: AQUVEXIS™

Engineering Relationships

  • Electrodeionization is an electrically assisted ionic-polishing treatment used after suitable upstream treatment.
  • Continuous electrodeionization performance depends on feed conductivity, ionic loading, pretreatment quality, flow and electrical operating conditions.
  • Conductivity or resistivity verification is part of performance assessment but does not alone diagnose all fouling or chemistry problems.
  • Electrodeionization remains a descriptive AQUVEXIS™ treatment family and is not an independent ELIMFILTERS technology mark.

Components

  • Electrodeionization module
  • Ion-exchange media
  • Ion-selective membranes
  • Electrical power interface
  • Feed and product-water monitoring points

Problems

  • Product-water conductivity drift
  • Ionic leakage
  • Scaling or fouling
  • Unstable electrical demand

Failure Modes

  • Pretreatment insufficient
  • Feed conductivity outside qualified range
  • Scaling or fouling develops
  • Electrical operating condition outside qualified duty

Symptoms

  • Product resistivity declines
  • Current demand changes
  • Pressure drop rises
  • Product quality becomes unstable

Root Causes

  • RO or upstream pretreatment deterioration
  • Feed chemistry changed
  • Scaling control insufficient
  • Module contamination or degradation

Diagnostic Methods

  • Trend feed and product conductivity/resistivity.
  • Review flow, pressure and electrical conditions.
  • Analyze feed chemistry and scaling potential.
  • Confirm upstream RO or pretreatment performance.

Corrective Actions

  • Correct upstream pretreatment.
  • Requalify feed and operating window.
  • Correct scaling or fouling source.
  • Service or replace the module according to validated condition evidence.

Maintenance Procedures

  • Trend conductivity/resistivity and operating current.
  • Monitor pressure and flow.
  • Maintain upstream membrane and pretreatment stages.
  • Verify product-water quality after service.

Operating Conditions

  • Feed conductivity
  • Ionic composition
  • Flow
  • Pressure
  • Temperature
  • Electrical operating window
  • Scaling potential
  • Required product-water resistivity

Standards

  • ISO 23044:2020 — guidance for industrial-wastewater softening/desalination for reuse and explicitly includes electrodeionization among the covered processes.
  • ASTM D6807-17(2026) — operating-performance test method for continuous electrodeionization devices on qualifying reverse-osmosis permeate.
  • ASTM D1125-23 — electrical conductivity and resistivity measurement of water for applicable feed/product verification.
  • Standard scope and feed-water limits must be respected; these methods do not create a universal EDI performance claim.
