AQUVEXIS Depth Filtration

Engineering Reference · Industrial & Process

Platform: AQUVEXIS™

Engineering Relationships

  • Depth Filtration addresses suspended solids by capturing particulate through the thickness of a porous medium.
  • Element selection depends on particle loading, target outlet condition, flow, allowable pressure drop and downstream sensitivity.
  • Depth-media efficiency and capacity are product-specific and cannot be inferred from nominal micron wording alone.
  • Depth Filtration can serve as standalone particulate control or pretreatment ahead of downstream water-treatment stages.

Components

  • Depth-filtration element
  • Housing interface and seals
  • Differential-pressure monitoring point
  • Upstream and downstream sampling points

Problems

  • Suspended solids
  • Premature downstream fouling
  • Rapid element plugging
  • Solids breakthrough

Failure Modes

  • Element loading beyond duty
  • Incorrect media grade
  • Seal or seating bypass
  • Flow above qualified range

Symptoms

  • Differential pressure rises rapidly
  • Outlet solids increase
  • Service interval shortens
  • Downstream equipment fouls

Root Causes

  • Feed solids exceed design basis
  • Particle distribution changed
  • Element area is insufficient
  • Housing bypass or seal defect

Diagnostic Methods

  • Characterize feed solids and required outlet condition.
  • Trend differential pressure at comparable flow.
  • Inspect element seating and seals.
  • Compare actual flow and loading with the selection basis.

Corrective Actions

  • Correct upstream solids source where practical.
  • Requalify media grade and element area.
  • Correct seal or seating defects.
  • Verify downstream water condition after service.

Maintenance Procedures

  • Trend differential pressure.
  • Inspect used elements for loading pattern and bypass evidence.
  • Preserve representative water sampling.
  • Investigate unexpectedly short element life.

Operating Conditions

  • Feed-water solids loading
  • Particle-size distribution
  • Flow
  • Allowable differential pressure
  • Temperature
  • Required outlet condition
  • Housing interface

Standards

  • ISO 20468-1:2018 — general performance-evaluation framework where depth filtration is part of a water-reuse treatment system.
  • No universal ISO element-performance standard is assigned across generic AQUVEXIS depth cartridges; removal efficiency, capacity and differential-pressure claims require validated product-specific test evidence.
