Service Interval Engineering Calculator
Calculate a recommended filter service interval from known dirt holding capacity (DHC), contamination ingestion rate, system flow, and a safety factor. Based on ISO 3724:2007 and SAE J1299:2008. Applicable to hydraulic, fuel, and lube oil filtration systems.
FORMULA
VARIABLES
ASSUMPTIONS
· DHC is measured per ISO 16889 using ISO Fine Test Dust (ISO 12103-1 A2).
· C_in is the time-averaged contamination ingestion rate, not a peak value.
· Flow Q is the rated flow through the filter element (not bypass flow).
· Safety factors from SAE J1299 Annex D: Construction 0.65, Agriculture 0.75, Industrial 0.85.
LIMITATIONS
· ISO FTD (used in DHC testing) differs from real-world contaminants — actual service life may vary.
· C_in must be measured or estimated; overestimating C_in gives conservative (shorter) intervals.
· Does not account for cold-start bypass, which reduces effective filtration time.
· Result is a planning interval — confirm with oil analysis or pressure differential monitoring in service.
